Dutasteride is similar to finasteride in that it is a DHT inhibitor.
We know that DHT is converted from testosterone by the action of 5-alpha-reductase. There are three types of 5α reductase, which are type I, type II, and type III. Finasteride can inhibit only type II and III, and dutasteride can inhibit all three. Dutasteride was 3 times more effective in inhibiting type I than finasteride and 100 times more effective in inhibiting type II. 5mg of finasteride per day reduced DHT in the blood by 71 percent and in the scalp by 38 percent, and 0.5mg of Dutasteride per day reduced DHT in the blood by 91 percent and in the scalp by 54 percent.
